Back in the old days at Garage Comedy around 2005 we had a strict “no stand-up comedy” policy for our main show at El Cid every Monday night. Of coarse there were people that weren’t happy about it and people who did stand-up just to be defiant. Then there was the problem of defining stand-up. We came up with a definition for “traditional” stand-up which was pretty much anything that resembled stand-up comedy from the 80’s. In other words, a comic telling jokes with a scientific laugh-per-minute joke ratio, old timey sounding patter or any subject matter that was hacky (overdone).
In 2006 we stretched the rules to include story telling as an acceptable format for our show. Finally, in 2007 we said that stand-up was officially allowed at garage comedy again. The rules for 2007 were: only two (new) stand-ups per show and stand-ups only get four minutes. Sadly, people lie and say they aren’t going to do stand-up and then end up doing it anyway, As a result our show has become inundated with stand-up comics. As you are all well aware it’s 2008. Our rules have changed again. Stand-up comedy in all it’s forms is NOT allowed on Monday nights.
There are of coarse exceptions:
1-Stand-up IS allowed on Silent Heckler nights, which are the last shows of every month.
2-Stand-up IS allowed if you get permission from Val Myers or Ryan Flynn, and only at the time YOU ARE BOOKED, in other words if you are booked on the show and then show up saying you want to do stand-up you won’t be allowed on stage.
3-Stand-up comedy is allowed at our open mic which is every monday BEFORE Garage Comedy. Sign-up is at 7pm, the open mic is from 7:45 to 8:45pm, if you go over your time or ignore the light Corky will physically wrestle you off stage.
Monday the 21st of January will be the last regular show that we allow stand-up. Again, if you want to do stand-up at our show you must:
1-do the open mic if we don’t know you
2-ask to be booked on a Silent Heckler Night (that is if we know you or not)
Thank you!

Optionally, should you lie and start doing stand-up on stage, the Silent Heckler technology will be instantly turned on, exposing your act to millions of hateful people with mobile phones. Your ego, let alone your act, will not likely survive.
